Robert served as a Sergeant on B-17 #41-24394, 353th Bomber Squadron, 301st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Bedford County, Virginia prior to the war.

He enlisted as a Private in the Army Air Corps on January 15, 1942 in Richmond, Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Photgrapher and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17 #41-24394 took off from Saint Donat in Algeria and was on a bombing mission over Castelvetrano, Italy and did not return to base for an undetermined cause.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
