On 10 Dec 1941 the S. S. 'Nereus', which had departed from St. Thomas, in the Virgin Islands, with a load of ore, was sailing alone when it disappeared at sea. No German submarine claimed to have sunk her. Her wreckage has never been found. [It is known that occasionally coal boats accidentally caught fire from coal residue accumulated in the hold].
Thought to have gone down in the Caribbean Sea, Nereus' 61 seamen comprising the ship's crew, including Senior 2nd Engineer Officer George Robinson, perished.
