Luther served as a First Lieutenant & Flight Commander on B-29 #42-24753, 879th Bomber Squadron, 499th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Matagorda County, Texas prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet on September 25, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Brown, Brownsville, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in surveying and also as Single, without dependents.

B-29 #42-24753 took off from Saipan on a night raid with other B-29's over the Nagoya urban area with incendiary bombs.

Shortly after take off a fire broke out in the No. 4 engine. They made what was called a "normal landing" at sea approximately 5 to 10 miles north of Saipan. The entire crew, even though multiple searches were performed, were lost in this crash during the war.

Luther was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Luther also has a "Cenotaph" in the Evergreen Cemetery, Lovelady, Texas with his parents.
