James served as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on B~24J ~ #42-73026, 431st Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Montgomery County, Maryland prior to the war.

B~24J #42-73026 took off, with other B-24's and a crew of " 10 ", from Tarawa on a Strike / Bombing Mission over Maloelop Atoll.

After a successful bombing run they were attacked and shot down by Japanese Fighter aircraft and crashed in the sea.

James, and his entire crew, were declared " Missing In Action " in this crash during the war.

He was awarded an Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
