William served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer/Gunner on B-24J (#42-109871), 42nd Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Lewis County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 22, 1942 in Utica, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, after taking off from Saipan, went missing on a mine-laying mission along the Japanese island of Chichi Jima during the war.

He was awarded a "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Purple Heart.
