Robert served as a Fireman Second Class, U.S.S. Franklin (CV-13), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.

He was declared "Missing In Action" when the Franklin was struck by a Japanese dive bomber 50 miles off the coast of Japan during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
