John Sherman Cooper
Birth: Aug. 23, 1901
Death: Feb. 21, 1991

US Senator, US Diplomat. Born in Somerset, Kentucky, he graduated from Yale College in 1923, attended Harvard Law School (1923-25), was admitted to the bar in 1928 and commenced to practice law in Somerset, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives (1928-30), Judge of Pulaski County, (1930-38) and a member of the board of trustees at University of Kentucky. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the 15th Corps, 3rd US Army in Europe. After the war, he was circuit judge of the twenty-eighth judicial district of Kentucky, (1945-46). In 1946, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Albert B. Chandler, serving until 1949. After his term, he was a delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations (1949-51) and served as adviser to the Secretary of State at the London and Brussels meetings of the Council of Ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1950. In 1952, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Virgil M. Chapman, serving until 1955. After his second US Senate term, President Dwight Eisenhower appointed him the 5th Ambassador to India and he served (1955-56). In 1956, he was elected as a Republican to his third term to the United States Senate, serving until 1973. Following the death of President John Kennedy in November 1963, President Lyndon Johnson appointed Cooper a member of the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination. Not seeking a reelection to the US Senate, his last public service were as Ambassador to East Germany, (1974-76) and as a delegate to the United Nations in 1981. He died at age 89 in a Washington, D.C. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
