He was previously a member of the National Guard. He re-enlisted in the Army on October 27, 1941, prior to the war, at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

Leland was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
