Helen D. Fredericks

Mrs. Helen D. Fredericks, 88, of Scottville, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the Oakview Medical Care Facility in Ludington.
Helen was born on Sept. 30, 1918 in Cicero, Illinois to Anthony and Julia (Maculis) Kakanauskas, and attended Catholic school in Cicero until moving to Mason County with her family in 1932. She attended Major School in Riverton, completing the eighth grade in 1934. She worked for several years at Weyenberg Shoe Factory; Carrom, Inc, and at Star WatchCase.

On April 30, 1945 she married Arthur C. Fredericks at the home of her parents in Scottville, and they celebrated 52 years together before Arthur preceded her in death on April 5, 1997. Helen loved to embroider, read and take care of her family. Her home was always decorated for the seasons like something out of House Beautiful, and wonderful smells could always be enjoyed from her kitchen, especially when she was making her braided cardamom bread.

Along with her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Julia Benson; and her brother, Charles Kakanauskas.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Arthur (Karen) Fredericks of Mount Pleasant, and Arlene (John) Heymes of Traverse City; her grandchildren, Ben (Adrienne) Heymes and their daughters Natalie and Lydia of Traverse City, Matt Heymes of Traverse City, Lisa (Brent) Flot of Denver, Colo., Farrah (Craig) Merges of Midland, and Kika Fredericks and her fianc? Brad McMillan of Mount Clemens; her nieces Barb (Thomas) Peplinski of Ludington and Shirley (Jerome) Rybicki of Free Soil.

Private family services will be held for Helen on Monday at the Stephens Life Story Funeral Home in Scottville. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery in Scottville.
