Corp. Leslie Sheeley Zeger was born June 1, 1896 in Montgomery Township, Franklin Co., Pa.
He was the youngest child of Jeremiah and Emeline Sheeley Zeger. He listed his father, Jeremiah as his employer on his draft card. Jeremiah was a farmer, so he must have been working on the farm.
Leslie trained at Camp Meade, Maryland. Assigned to the 316th Inf., Co. C, 79th Pennsylvania "Lorraine Division".
He was killed in action in WW1 in France on November 4, 1918 during some of the heaviest fighting in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He was 22.
He is buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, France.
Leslie was the brother of my great grandfather, John W. Zeger and my great grand uncle.
The photo of Leslie is the only photo I've been able to find. It is from a 1919 newspaper listing the WW1 Honor Roll of Franklin County, Pa., in the collection of the Legion in Leslie's hometown. It has been enhanced by some very talented friends.
Thank you to soilsister for the beautiful photo of Leslie's grave, the Mercersburg Legion for allowing me in to photograph their photo of Leslie and Luci S for sponsoring this memorial.
