He enlisted in the Navy on April 30, 1943 and was assigned to LST-749 on June 23, 1944.
U.S.S. LST-749 was struck by a Japanese kamikaze while on operations in Luzon, Philippine Islands area. The ship was hit in the bridge area instantly killing many of the navy personnel on board. 16 were lost in this attack. " 3 " were rescued but died on the destroyer Converse later that night.
Edward was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
