Mrs Howard, 90. Pioneer Devine Mother Dies
DEVINE - Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Devine Methodist church for Mrs. Betty Abernathy Howard, 90, who passed away March 8, 1948 at her home in Devine - just eleven days before her 91st birthday.
On Nov. 20, 1882, she was married to D. L. Howard. They made their home in Tennessee in their early married life later moving to Arkansas. In May, 1886, they, with their family moved to Devine.
When Mrs. Howard came to Devine it was a typical frontier town. The business section consisted of a row of false front wooden structures on either side of the railroad. Her husband D. L. Howard, who preceded her in death, established the first drug store in Devine.
Mrs. Howard devoted her time to rearing her family of two boys and one girl. Active in church work she was a member of the Methodist Church for almost 80 years.
Surviving are the three children Mrs. Mae Stansel, D. M. Howard of Devine and Kenneth Howard of Maracaibo, Venezuela, South America. Surviving also arte the following grandchildren: David Curry, James and Woods Howard, Mrs. Helen Bernhardt and Mrs. Betsy Drummy.
There are five great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were H. W. Eschenberg, J. Travis Lilly, C. P. DeBose, H. E. Howard, George Briscoe and E. W. Howard, Jr. Honorary pallbearers: Dr. G. S. Woods, Dr. H. M. Bush, G. M. Turner, W. L. DuBose, E. J. Sollock, J. D. Klingeman, W. S. Lilly, G. D. Whitfield, R. L. Connolly and A. B. Thompson.
