The first name originally on this memorial was spelled Gholston, likely transcribed from cemetery lists. Gholson's first name is found with many different spellings but most frequently in older records as Gholson. Other spellings include Golson or Goldson.
Although the age on the cemetery records would indicate a birth year of 1799, multiple census and other documents consistently indicate he was born in 1797.
Gholson was the son of Thomas and Catherine Stapp Wisdom. He began his life in Adair County, Kentucky. Gholson has been confused with the son of Francis and Susanna, also Gholson Wisdom. However, this other Gholson was born in 1821 and married Rachel Coffee, later settling in Missouri. Location of the land purchase records in Morgan County, Illinois confirm the middle name of Stapp for this Gholson and thus connect him with confidence to Thomas and Catherine Stapp Wisdom.
Gholson married Lucy about 1825. Lucy was born about 1810 in Kentucky. Her maiden name is unknown.
In about 1830, Gholson and Lucy migrated to Illinois, settling near his brother William who immigrated to Illinois in the same period. Gholson and Lucy had at least four children:
Thomas M. born about 1832 in Illinois Catherine Laura born about 1835 in Illinois Kitty Dolly born in 1840 in Illinois, died in 1854 John J. born about 1844 in Illinois
It is known that Lucy was still living in 1870 but no death date has been located nor her final resting place.
