Albert L. Blowers is Killed in Yard
Juniata Youth is Caught Between Cars Which Were Being Shifted and His Life Crushed Out
Albert Lee Blowers, aged 19, residing at Eleventh avenue and Twentieth street, Juniata, employed as a car oiler at the eastbound repair tracks at East Altoona, was killed at 4:10 o'clock yesterday afternoon when he was caught between two cars and crushed. Death was probably instantaneous.
Blowers had been working in the yards for some time and was assisting in the shifting of a number of freight cars. The shifting crew, the engine of which was No. 1821, was in charge of Conductor Harry Boyles. A number of cars had been left standing on the eastbound repair tracks and were being shifted together by the crew. Between the cars there was a possible space of from 3 to 10 feet. Blowers evidently failed to notice a warning signal and was caught and crushed as he was going between two low wooden cars.
Joseph Irwin was nearby and called to him to stop but it was too late. When Blowers saw that he was likely to be caught, he attempted to leap to safety, but he slipped and the bumpers caught him against the chest and back, crushing out his life. Foreman H. T. Helter and Irwin got him out, but he expired within three minutes. Coroner W. T. Blackburn was working in the vicinity and he took charge of the body, turning it over to an undertaker to be prepared for burial.
Albert Lee Blowers was born near Juniata, Oct. 20, 1897, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Blowers. He was single and resided with his parents. He was an attendant of St. John's Lutheran church, East Juniata. The parents, three brothers, Ralph and Theodore, jr., at home and William of Youngstown, and also the following sisters, survive: Mrs. Inez Wells and Mrs. Flora Bailey of Carnegie; Mrs. Mary Wright of Altoona and Dorothy at home. Funeral services will be held from the late home Saturday afternoon, Rev. D. Leroy Hauser, pastor of St. John's church, to officiate.
