Fredrick was the son of Alexander Hamilton and Ann McLean Dunihue. He married Sallie G. Northcraft about 1871. They had 7 children.

Fredrick was a Civil War Veteran. He received his honorable discharge in Nashville, Tennessee on June 28, 1865. After his discharge, he returned to Bedford and was appointed Deputy Sheriff for 6 years. He was elected Sheriff in 1878, and served in this capacity from 1879 to 1883.
