He served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy. He was lost in the sinking of the cruiser USS Quincy in the Battle of Savo Island on August 9, 1942. The Navy records his death as August 10, 1943 as it was the Navy's policy to list MIAs as dead a year and a day after they were reported missing. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
There is a cenotaph in his memory at the Danville South Cemetery, Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana.
