Helen Amanda Halbakken, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.

Helen was born on Sept. 23, 1920, in Pelican Rapids, the daughter of Abel and Hannah (Johanson) Anderson. She grew up on the family farm northwest of Pelican Rapids and was baptized and confirmed at Pelican Lutheran Church. She attended school in rural Pelican Rapids.

On Feb. 26, 1938, she married William Halbakken in Sisseton, S.D. Together they farmed west of Pelican Rapids until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1946.

They owned and operated several area businesses throughout the years. Helen also worked as a waitress at several cafes and did housekeeping for local resorts.

In 1971, Helen and William began an antique business. They also raised and trained several hundred draft horses on their hobby farm north of Detroit Lakes.

Helen enjoyed traveling, antiquing, baking and visiting with family, grandchildren and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Jerome "Huck" and William "Billy;" two grandchildren, Gary Halbakken Jr. and Lisa Halbakken; a brother, Richard Anderson; and two sisters, Irene Christianson and Norma Halbakken.

Survivors include her four sons, Charles Halbakken of Hawley, Gary (Linda) Halbakken of Franklin, Tenn., Dale (Cindy) Halbakken of Fort Wayne, Ind., Ronald (Judy) Halbakken of Detroit Lakes; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Halbakken of Lake Park; a sister-in-law, Ruby Neuleib of Fergus Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Foundation (1415 Madison Ave. Detroit Lakes, MN 56501) or donor's choice.

Visitation: Today from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes

Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes
