Willie Mae was born on February 7, 1912 to George Albert and Lizzie Mae (Wright) Cochran in Vinson, Oklahoma. She was the oldest of 10 children. She went home to be with our Lord on August 2, 2010 in Chouteau.

When Willie Mae was four years old, she and her parents traveled by covered wagon to Mayes County and settled in the New Caanan district which is now the Mid America Industrial Park. She attended the New Caanan School and with her parents attended the Archer Baptist Church and later the McNair Church.

She attended and graduated from Chouteau High School in 1930. There she played basketball all four years with their team winning several tournaments. She had many stories to tell and entertain her grandchildren. Her love of the game had her attending every game she could until it became too difficult for her to walk up the steps. She never had a bad word to say about the players, coaches or referees. She was honored several times by the team members in the latter years and she was very proud of those occasions.

When Willie Mae was eleven years old her family moved to a farm 1 ½ miles southwest of Chouteau and they attended Chouteau First Baptist Church. She was saved and baptized in Chouteau Creek in June 1925 and has been a member of this church ever since with the exception of a few years living in California and Wagoner.

Willie Mae married Otis Clinton Crow in 1932 in Pryor by Rev. Grant Teters. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage before Otis' death in 1996. During those years they reared four children and she instilled in all of them a love of God and the church as well as being instrumental in bringing her husband to know Jesus. She was a proud and happy wife and mother. The day Otis and all four of her children were baptized in the Verdigris River near Wagoner. She had helped to organize the country Sunday school at the old Pipeline School where they were all saved.

She loved her church dearly and held various positions but her joy was teaching primary children. She taught and was superintendent of the primary department for over 20 years.

Willie Mae also enjoyed gardening and working in her flower beds. She is well known around Chouteau for all her beautiful flowers. She furnished fresh flowers for church every week from her garden. She would get up early every Sunday in order to pick and arrange the flowers. She was president of the Chouteau Garden Club for 11 years and received many prizes for her canning, flower arrangements and sewing. Her mother taught her to sew when she was 12 years old and she helped make clothes for her nine brothers and sisters. She not only helped her mother with the housework and with her young siblings, she also helped her father in the fields until her younger brothers got old enough to help.

Willie Mae served on the Election Board several years and did substitute teaching in Chouteau schools. In 1984 she was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Chouteau Chamber of Commerce.

She loved her family and made clothes for all of the grandchildren. Each Christmas, for several years, she made identical dresses for her five granddaughters. She has also made many quilts over the years, giving each child, grandchild and great grandchild a quilt. She also made around 100 baby quilts for Mexican babies that were distributed by missionaries as well as numerous baby quilts given to expectant mothers in her church.

She was a vital part of the Chouteau community as well as her church and will be greatly missed by her dear friends and family.
