Burnell M. Diehl, 89, passed away Monday, August 2, 2010, at Manor Care Dallastown. He was the husband of Ann (Chrismon) Diehl with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. they were married April 5 1946, in Highpoint, N.C. Mr.
Diehl was born October 16, 1920, in his grand parents farm house in Loganville, the son of the late Mervin C. and Esther (Lerew) Diehl.
During 1925, his family moved to York City where he lived the balance of his life time. He was a 1938 graduate of York High School and was active in Varsity baseball and football. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1942 with a B.A. degree in Business Administration and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
He served in World War II as 1st lieutenant in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier with 7th Air Force, 11th Heavy Bombardment Group, 431st Squadron based in the South Pacific, the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation. He flew 40 bombing missions in B-24 Liberator planes attacking Japanese held islands, and logged 438 combat overwater flight hours. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air medal with 6 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars.
Mr. Diehl was employed at the former local B.M. Root Co. for 36 years, serving as vice-president in the sale and manufacture of industrial woodworking machinery, with retirement at the close of 1982.
Mr. Diehl is survived by wife, a son Thomas 'Tom' M. Diehl and wife, Peg (Moyer); grandson, Bradley T. Diehl and wife, Carissa (Troup); granddaughter, Amanda L. Diehl and fiancee Greg Gemmill; three great-grandchildren, Mya, Olivia, Noah Diehl, all of York; brother, William Diehl, wife Joan and family of Garden City Long Island.
Full military rites will be performed by the York County Veterans Honor guard.
Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Loganville.
