Matthew Erwin came to the United States in 1837, arriving in New York on June 9th aboard the "Mary Howland." He was married to Mary McKay (some family records show Bartley)* and they brought all their children: Matthew, James, Edward, Hannah, Eliza, Mary, and John. They settled in New York City for a short time and eventually migrated into Michigan and settled in Southfield, where they remained for the rest of their days. In Ireland they lived in the little townland of Drummond, in Drumachose Parish near Limavady in County Londonderry.

*Much research has been done by myself and other Erwin (Irwin) descendants and no official record has surfaced to show if Matthew's wife was McKay or Bartley. Further comments about my research can be found on FamilySearch. (Barbara Lewis)
