He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LSgt McCallum was killed by small arms fire while commanding his men in a security operation in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province.
Aged 31. Born in Hanover, Jamaica, he moved to England when he was 16 and was an apprentice mechanic before joining the Army at age 20 in June 1998. After infantry training at Pirbright and Catterick, he joined 1st Battalion Irish Guards in Germany in March 1999. LSgt McCallum served in Kosovo, and three tours of Iraq. A reconnaissance section commander, he deployed to Afghanistan and was appointed the Platoon Sergeant of a 27-man Fire Support Group. Described as a consummate soldier, he had been selected for promotion in September.
LSgt McCallum leaves behind his son Kevin, his partner Edith Geirsz, father Paul McCallum, mother Lurline and step-father Errol Watson, brothers Rodney and Montel, sisters Sandra, Denise and Milissa, along with other relatives and friends. His family said, "Dale was a wonderful father, brilliant brother a loving son. He was cherished and highly respected by everyone that knew him. He will be deeply and sadly missed. We all loved Dale for his easy going attitude and his sunshine smile, for his mannerisms and his charm. Dale was passionate about life and displayed immense enthusiasm for every challenge he took on. We all love and will miss him dearly and may his soul rest in peace."
Funeral with full military honours was held on August 20, 2010 at the New Testament Church of God, Willesden, London.
