Ida Johanna (Zessin) Markley, Seventh Child, Second Daughter of Ferdenand & Henrietta Mame (Henrich) Zessin. Wife of William Henry Markley.
From the Zessin 9 Booklet:
Ida Johanna Zessin was born, April 8, 1868, in Lupow, Germany. (Which is now Poland) She was two years old when her parents departed Germany and migrated to Madison County, Nebraska. When she was old enough, she walked several miles to a German School in or near Meadow Grove, Nebraska. The Children wrote on slates and read from German books. She learned to read, write and spell in English on her own initiative.
In Germany, babies were vaccinated before two years of age. She had many of these marks on her arms and as a result never had any childhood diseases and with the exception of typhoid fever, enjoyed good health.
As a young girl, she waited tables in a restaurant in Madison. She said the dishes were white and very heavy.
Ida was married to William Henry Markley of Atchinson county, Missouri. Her Brother, Ferdinand (Fennet), and her sister, Adelina (Lena), witnessed the ceremony as performed by Pastor Denninger of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. After marriage, they engaged in farming not only in Nebraska, but also in South Dakota and Colorado.
Since her education was so meager, she was determined her children would receive a college education. She was always proud of the fact that she wanted to be completely "American". On hearing the Star Spangled Banner, she would say "Oh, how that thrills me".
At age 80, she was in an auto accident in which her back was broken. However, with avid determination and the aid of a back brace, this did not daunt her spirits.
Ida was always active in community affairs, a devoted mother, a true friend to all. She moved to Greeley, Colorado in 1948 to live with her daughter, Lovina. After a short illness, she died March 29, 1959 and is buried in Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley, Colorado
