Gertrude Frances is the daughter of Frank "Ben" Brown and Eliza E. Lawell and was born in Edgar County, Illinois. She was from a family of four girls, but her sister Laura is the only other sister to survive to adulthood. Her grandparents were James Harrison Brown and Catherine Bodine on her father's side and William Lawell and Esther Cornell on her mother's. She is descended (on the Brown side) from pioneer Catholic families who arrived in Maryland with Lord Baltimore while fleeing religious persecution in England in 1630. She was married three times: 1) Francis H. Abell (they had one daughter, Gretchen Louise Abell b. 1898; 2) Wilfred Souligne (no children); 3) Edward Jones (no children).
Gertrude lived most of her life in Sullivan, Indiana and lived in West Palm Beach in her later years with her daughter Gretchen.
