OBITUARY: Josiah Nelson - Josiah Nelson died Dec. 12, 1909, at 11:15 p.m. at the home of his son Wiley Nelson of this city. The deceased was 86 years, 11 months and 19 days old at the time of his death. All that loving hands could do was done but the master saw fit to call him from us and all earthly power was in vain.
For some time he had been confined to his bed due to old age, and dropsy. He was born near Galliopolis, Ohio, on Jan. 1, 1823. At the age of 12 years he removed to Madison county, Indiana, near Anderson, from where he went to Cole county, Mo., near Jefferson City, where he was united in marriage to Miss Dorcas Denny. To this union were born five children, one died in infancy, Mrs. Ellen Murphy of Cameron, Mrs. Joe Mann of Alexis, Mr. Geo. Nelson of Logan, Kan., one daughter, Sarah, died in this city eight years ago. With his family he came to Knox county where, in 1855, the home was made sad by the death of the wife and mother. In 1858 Mr. Nelson was married to Mary Bowman to whom were born eight children, four died in infancy, those living are Mrs. Sam McCracken, Wiley Nelson, Mrs. Wm. Branson of this city, Mr. Alvin Nelson of Cameron.

Mr. Nelson leaves 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren to mourn his loss, his wife died some six or seven years ago.

The funeral services were held in the M. E. church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. M. L. O'Hara. The singing was by a quartet, Misses Grace Richardson and Lelia Shumaker, and Messrs. C. E. and Harry Smith. They sang "Asleep in Jesus," and "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me," Hazel Shifflett sang the solo, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." Mrs. Graves presided at the organ. The remains were laid to rest in the Cherry Grove cemetery. End of obit found in The Galesburg Evening Mail, Galesburg, Illinois, Wednesday, December 15, 1909, Page 2, under the ABINGDON NEWS headline. As found and typed by Ervin & Ann Jenness.
