Born in Vermont, Janet Fisher moved to Michigan when her father took a position coaching baseball at the University of Michigan. She attended the local schools in Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan's School of Art and Design. During WWII, while her husband was overseas, she worked briefly as a designer for Ford Motor Company. In the late 1940's and early 1950's Janet worked as an interior designer.
