George C. Askern.

George Cornelius Askern was born in Marion county, Iowa, August 11, 1858, and died in Liberty township March 9, 1926, age 67 years, 6 months, 28 days.

His parents died when he was small, leaving him with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Newman in Marion county. He was united in marriage to Sophia Taylor August 21, 1888, to this union was born ten children, all of whom survive. Those who survive are his wife Sophia, William J., Clarence C., Raymond Otho, and Margaret Iona Askern of Liberty, Mrs. Bessie Morton of Russell, Mr. Lewis Askern of Seymour, Mrs. Stella Patras of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Mary Bell and Mrs. Sadie Cox of Miles City, Mont., Mrs. Ruby Shackelford, Eagleville, Mo., and twelve grandchildren.He united with the Christian church at Confidence, Iowa in 1902. He and his family lived in Wayne and Lucas counties until the fall of 1922, moving to Clarke county, living on a farm north of Liberty until March 1, moving south of Liberty where he passed away. He had been in failing health since an accident caused by falling slate in a coal mine at Olmity, Iowa July 23, 1920, of which he never fully recovered. He was practically confined to his bed in November 1925, and suffered a great deal in his last illness, but was very meek and patient and done everything possible to make his home cheerful.

Funeral services were held at the Liberty church Friday, March 12, at 10 o'clock a.m., conducted by Rev. Warner Muir pastor of the Christian church. interment was made in the Liberty cemetery.
