Muriel Charlotte Hutchings was born June 16, 1899 in Crawford, Nebraska; the fifth child of Newman C. Hutchings (1853-1936) and Mary A. Baese (1858-1922).
At the age of three, she moved with her family to Yakima, Washington, where she grew up in the home that her father built at 605 N. Naches Avenue.
In her late teens, she played sheet music for her brother in law, Frank Lanterman in his radio and music shop. She also often substituted at the Capitol Theater, playing background music on the organ for the old silent movies.
In 1918, Muriel graduated from Yakima High School.
She went to work as a book keeper for T. J. Borthwick company and in 1919 she met Avilla Fortier, a clerk at the store. On August third, 1920, she married him.
The couple was wed at St. Martin's College in Lacey, Washington (near Olympia). The priest who officiated was Avilla's uncle, Fr Clement Regimbal (1891-1933).
Muriel and Avilla raised four children in Yakima.
Muriel was a 50 year member of the Royal Neighbors of America, and a charter member of the Yakima Garden Club. Her hobbies were playing the piano and gardening.
Muriel Fortier passed away on January 20th, 1986 at Crescent Convalescent Nursing Home, her husband Avilla at her bedside.
At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband of sixty five years, four adult children, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Her burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Yakima.
We also mourn the loss of her daughters, Mary Lou Fortier Walker (1923-1991), and Patricia Ann Parrish (1930-2008); and of Patricia's husband, Granville Lewis Parrish (1930-2014).
