Lowell Dean Thomas, 81, of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Celebration Center, Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gunderson's with Masonic Services at 7 p.m. Friday at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Pat; two sons, Dan (Rhonda) Thomas of Jasper, Tenn., and Roland (Carolyn) Thomas of Ottawa, Ill.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jean Volsicka of Bellevue, Neb. He is preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Helen (Hastie) Thomas and his stepmother, Mabel (Spratt) Thomas.
Lowell Dean Thomas was born on April 4, 1929, in Omaha, Neb., and was raised on a farm near Oakland, Iowa. He graduated from the Oakland High School and later graduated from Scott Community College in motorcycle mechanics. On Jan. 21, 1951, Lowell married Pat Kuhn and they lived in southwest Iowa until 1952 when they moved to Fort Dodge. They later lived in Dayton, Jefferson, and later moved back to Fort Dodge. Lowell worked as a motorcycle mechanic and did several other jobs. For the last 20 years, he drove semi-truck and in 1999, Lowell retired because of his ill health.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge and a 50 year member of the Masons in Jefferson.
Memorial may be left to Hospice of Fort Dodge or to Friendship Haven.
