Civil War Union Army Officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1855. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th United States Infantry regiment, he served in duty on the frontier, mostly in Texas. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in February 1861, he was captured by Texas Insurgents in April 1861 just days after the Civil War began. Not formally exchanged in August 1862, he had been promoted to Captain, Assistant Quartermaster in May 1861. After serving in the Army Quartermaster Department in Washington DC from July 1861 to January 1864, he then served on Special duty before being assigned to command the Quartermasters Depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee in May 1864. He served in that capacity until he was dropped from the service in July 1864.
From 1864 he served as a civil and mining engineer in his native Pennsylvania before being reappointed to the Regular Army. Commissioned as a Captain in the 27th United States Regular Infantry regiment on July 28, 1866, he served until he died at Fort Sully, South Dakota in November 1868.
