Ms. Eppes passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Vosswood nursing Center in Houston.She was born during a snowstorm on January 31, 1937, in Teague, Texas to Richmond "Rich" and Ruth Haynie Eppes, died July 24, 2010. After leaving Sam Houston State University, Mavis spent her entire career at Vinson & Elkins, a prestigious Houston law firm. She began work as a file clerk in the Records Department in 1959, where her organizational and leadership skills were gradually recognized and rewarded by her supervisors. Progressing through a series of promotions, Mavis was appointed Records Department Manager in the early 1970s. In that role she and her associates established an unmatched standard of excellence in the field of records management. Together they created the firms first manual records system and later transformed that system to electronic form. After 40 years of service at Vinson & Elkins, Mavis retired in April 1999 as Director of Records and Information management, the first person in the firm to hold that title. Mavis was a member of the First Baptist Church Spring Branch, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, Jamestowne Society, Society of the Descendants of Francis Eppes I of VirginiaEpes, Eppes, Epps, Texas First Families, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was recognized in Who's Who of American Women. She also was active in ARMA Houston Board of Directors; she served as recording secretary, corresponding secretary, vice president, president. She delighted in writing industry related articles and in serving as editor of the ARMA Houston Chapter newsletter, the ARMAdilla. Mavis was affectionately called
"Mamadilla" for her contribution to the newsletter. Mavis was a pioneer in the field of modern records management. She is credited with revolutionizing the management of legal records. Mavis Eppes, FAI was awarded numerous awards for achievement in her field, but the ultimate award was in 1999 when she was inducted into the Company of Fellows for ARMA International. ARMA International consistently looked to Mavis to assist other law firms and professionals worldwide and to answer questions, provide technical data, share policies and procedures, and train other information and record managers. She was a popular speaker and trainer.
