Thomas Carr, a Philadelphia music publisher, was born in London, England, on March 8, 1780, the son of Joseph Carr (1739-1819), and Mary Carr (1739-1815). The family came to Baltimore, Maryland.

Thomas Carr was married to Milcah Bell Merryman (1786-1849) of Baltimore, the daughter of Benjamin Merryman (1739-1814) and Mary Bell (1747-1822). Thomas Carr and his family later settled in Philadelphia.

Thomas Carr's brother was Benjamin Carr (1768-1831) who was a famous music composer and was called the father music of Philadelphia.

Thomas and Milcah Bell had many children: Benjamin Carr (1806-1807); John Carr, Artist, (1808-1837) married Margaret Peale, daughter of Artist Raphaelle Peale; Joseph Carr (1810-1859); Mary Jordan Carr (1812-1908) m. Levi Merryman; Milcah Bell Carr (1813-1889) m. 1st, Benjamin F. Johnson and 2nd, Joel Smith Harris; Thomas Carr (1815-1876); Benjamin Merryman Carr (1817-1894) m. Eliza Ann Nicholls; Ann Rebecca Carr (1818-1851) m. Dr. Andrew Comstock of Philadelphia; Wiliam Gwynn Carr m. Mary Scott of Bensalem, Bucks County; Elizabeth Merryman Carr (1822-1882)m. Mahlon K. Knowles of Bucks County; Caroline Carr (1829-1855) m. Dana Eames; and James Smith Carr (1827-1851).

Both Thomas Carr and Milcah Bell Merryman Carr died on the same day on April 15, 1849, and both were buried at Monument Cemetery, now defunct. Section A, Lot 181. The Monument Cemetery now belongs to Temple University. The contents of the grave have been removed to Lawnview Cemetery, Rockledge. The Carr lot, Broadlawn, Section 36, Grave 17-20. A marked only with a small flat bronze plate bearing the letter "C".
