John was the second of seven children born to Edmund and Nancy (Turrentine) Anderson. His father was born in Union County, Kentucky in 1812 and his mother was born in Alabama. He married Mary Barnett, daughter of James and Sarah Barnett in 1862. They had one son, James, before Mary's death in 1863. John then married Martha E. Patrick, daughter of Hillery and Sarah Patrick in December 1866. They had five children.
John enlisted in Company A of the Eighty-seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was made a Captain and promoted to Major in 1864.
After the war, John returned to Hamilton County, Illinois where he farmed and raised stock.
He was a member of the school board for many years, Odd Fellows and Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
