Samuel served as a Private with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company B during the Civil War.

He enlisted in 1st Delaware on September 25, 1861 for a 3 year term. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 31 years old, 5' 9" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, employed as a carpenter, and residing in Wilmington, Delaware.

He was "Killed In Action" in the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg during the war.
