Dr. R. Archie Ellis, DD, 86, a previous resident of Tryon, NC., died Wednesday, Dec 18, 2002, in Greenville.
Born in Barnwell Co., SC, March 1, 1916, he was the son of the late Dr. Ephram W. and Mabel Ellis. Dr. Ellis was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Lois Avant Ellis, a Tryon native. He received a B.A. Degree in 1937 and his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1953 from Furman University. He also attended Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. Dr. Ellis served as pastor of Riverside Baptist Church in Greenville, and later served First Baptist Church in Landrum, First Baptist Church in Wadesboro, NC.,and First Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC.
In 1953, he became pastor of First Baptist Church in Columbia, where he served 17 years. Continuing his service in Columbia, he became Commissioner of Social Services for the State of South Carolina.
Dr. Ellis has served his denomination as a member of the Executive Board of the North Carolina Baptist Convention, and served two years as President of the Board. At the time of his coming to the pastorate in Columbia, he was President of the North Carolina Baptist Convention. He was also a trustee of Wake Forest University and Furman University. He served as vice-president of the Souther Baptist Convention from 1958-1959, and is the recipient of the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation Award, as well as numerous other community service awards. He was a member of the Tryon Kiwanis Club and was a former Kiwanian of the year.
Surviving are two sons, Richard A. Ellis, Jr. of Tryon, NC, and John Avant Ellis of Marietta, GA.; one sister, Marion Yhares, of Coreopolis, Pa.; two granddaughters; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will he held at 11 am, Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at First Baptist Church of Tryon, NC, with Dr. Darryl E. Maxwell officiating.
Burial will be at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, NC.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight, at the McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, NC.
