Daughter of Wilhelm Schoppenhorst and Maria Peterjohann, Maria Schoppenhorst married Ernst Winter 23 Sep 1858. Four known children were born to this couple: William Wesley, Edward, Amanda and Ada. Three children were listed as heirs of their grandfather, Wilhelm Schoppenhorst, after his death 29 Aug 1884. The widower, Ernst Winter, married again in 1869.

Maria Winter's obituary appeared in Der Christliche Apologete Aug 1868 and was written by her uncle by marriage, Fr. Fiegenbaum. The attempted translation is below; copy of original obituary is in possession of Jane Denny:
Maria Winter, wife of Ernst Winter is no more among the living of this earth. She died 23 June 1868 of … despite all medical assistance was the cause of her death. She was born the 27th of Feb 1838 in Warren County, Missouri.
She sought and found the Lord when she was 7 years old and united herself at the same time to the Methodist Episcopal Church under the work of Franz Horstman and remained true to God and the Church until death. The Bible was her dearest book … her husband often found her studying it when he returned home. This comforts him now. Hers was an example of an early conversion. Let no one hold back his children to confess early, but greatly beseech them to seek the Lord. She leaves behind a deeply grieved husband and three children, whose mother's care is greatly needed. The loving God will bless our dear brother and his children and unite them again in heaven.
