Obituary from Logan Republican, 3/8/1928:

John E. Allen was born in Nodway county, Missouri, January 14, 1861, and departed this life February 27, 1928 at his home in Beaver township, 8 miles northwest of Logan, at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 12 days. He came to Kansas with his parents when he was nine years old and has lived in the immediate neighborhood ever since.

He was married to Miss Bell Hill at her home northwest of Logan by Rev. Layton, pastor of the Logan M.E. church. To this union were born 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls.

On the 21st of this last December, while the pastor, Rev. Riley, was visiting in the Allen home, and talking upon the great plan of salvation, Mr. Allen acknowledged his need of a Savior and accepted Christ on the terms of the Gospel and was gloriously saved; also his dear wife was saved at the same time.

He was strong in the faith to the end, manifesting it at different times in prayer and testimony, stating on one occasion that his face was set in no other direction.

During the pastor's last visit, two days before his death, as he stood by the bedside he asked Brother Allen if there was anything that he could do. Brother Allen requested that they sing, "On the Stormy Banks of Jordon" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" After they finished singing, with much effort he raised his hands and clapped them saying, "It just hits the spot."

He leaves to mourn his loss, his precious wife, seven children - Mrs. Lulu Woltman [1886-1982] of Phillipsburg, Wayne [1890-1972, Ralph [1893-1982], Edgar [1896-1959], Mrs. Edith Laughlin [1898-1991], Mrs. Argie Sides [1903-1992] and John Jr. [1908-2000], all of the home community; eleven grandchildren; seven sisters and two brothers and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in the Logan M.E. church on Wednesday at two P.M. conducted by the pastor, Rev. Riley. Interment was made in the Logan cemetery.

Servant of God, well done.
Thy glorious warfare passed;
The battle fought, the victory won.
And thou art crowned at last.
