Hooks, --Andrew John, son of Joseph Hooks, was born March 25, 1886, in Indiana; died at the home of his daughter (Mrs. Ray Graefe) Aug. 29, 1949; aged 83 y. 5 m. 4 d. In 1894 he was united in marriage to Clara Ogburn who survives. For a number of years they lived near Kenmare, N. Dak., where he farmed and worked in a coal mine. He was converted and received into the Spring Valley Mennonite Church near Kenmare, in which faith he died. Surviving besides his wife are 2 sons (Amos, Saxis, Va.; Claude, Westover, Md.), 6 daughters (Dessie-Mrs. Leslie Kauffman and Bessie-Mrs. Dan Kauffman, twins, Kalispell, Mont.; Ruth-Mrs. Ray Graefe, Pocomoke City, Md.; Myrtle, Annapolis, Md.; Edith-Mrs. Raymond Long, Princess Anne, Md.; and Alice-Mrs. Carroll Phillips, Pocomoke City), 22 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Two daughters (Lela and Katie) preceded him in death. In 1919 he and most of the family moved to Westover, Md., where he farmed. Funeral services were held at the Holly Grove Mennonite Church in charge of Isaac Mast, his former bishop, assisted by Amos C. King, and George M. Hostetler. Burial was made in the church cemetery.

Note thanks to FAG member David Oxford,

"Might I ask that you review/research and correct birth date of Andrew. Your current posting of birth year conflicts with the obituary..., both of which are in error. I realize that the 1900 census reflects birth year of 1870 but that conflicts with the other census records which suggest 1866 or, at excess, 1867. I believe that the obit birth year is a typo of 1866 (a logical error because we know that he was not born in 1886). Moreover, his mother died in 1866."
