At age 16 he joined the Confederate Army, 21st Infantry. He returned home in 1865 and engaged in mercantile business until 1874.

He was married to Gussie Hamilton 9 Dec 1873 by T.C. Greenwood. He and Gussie had six children and eventually made their home in the large stone house on Davis Street west in Luling.

In 1874 he moved to Luling, Texas and built a store at the corner of Laurel and Pierce and together with his brother, John Philip, formed a successful business.

The store eventually relocated to the corner of Pecan and Davis in Luling in 1883. Another brother, William Byron, moved from Prairie Lea to join the business.

Upon James K's death in 1890, his nephews, George C. Walker and William Philip Walker, purchased his interest from the estate. The store eventually was named Walker Bros and Co., and still exists on Davis Street in Luling, Texas.
