John Alfred Rains, 88, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2010, Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois. He was born on September. 23, 1921 in Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois, to Matson and Mary Schuman Rains.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a plane mechanic on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington during World War II.
Mr. Rains was employed by Sears Paper Box Co. as a commercial artist and later retired from the company. John was a longtime member of St. James Methodist Church, the American Legion Post 210 and the Blue Lodge Masonic organization.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia Lee Rains and a cousin, Joseph William "Jody" Schuman.
Survivors include cousins, Dorothy Schuman Sager, Richard Schuman (Barbara), Michael Sager (Nancy), Karen Vickers (John), Jennifer Schuman Fry (Jimmy), Gene Miller (Marleen) Dorothy Rains Smith, Eileen Clutter Walderon and Bill Clutter (JoAnne).
