Mary Ophelia Mooney was the daughter of Thomas P. Mooney, one of the first settlers in Caldwell County. Thomas P. Mooney had moved from Georgia in the 1840s and settled in the Prairie Lea area.

Mary O. Mooney married William Byron Walker a year after he returned from the Civil War. They made their home in Prairie Lea and had two girls.

They moved to Luling in 1885 so that W.B. could join his brothers John Philip and James Knox in establishing Walker Bros. general store on Davis Street in Luling.

Mary O. lived less than a year after her husband's death. She died at the age of 51 years.
