John Harris Grier, eldest of eight children of Mary Harris and Col. Thomas I. Grier, was born 25 Sep 1811. He married Margaret P. Ross at the residence of Dr. John Moore Harris, her brother-in-law, in York County, SC by Rev. Archibald White on 8 May 1834. They had two children, Malvina and William Lowndes Grier.
John Harris Grier's second marriage was to Mrs. Emeline Bowden on 10 March 1846. They had only one child, Frances Mary Grier born 22 Jan 1850. Frances married N. Wimble of Virginia.
John Harris Grier's third marriage was to Lucy Smith, of York County, SC, on 5 Jan 1860. They had two sons, Leonard Grier born 12 Nov 1860 and Thomas J. Grier born 10 May 1863.
