Mildred Mae Hendry Bengel, 86, of Johnson City, NY, formerly of Euclid Avenue, Binghamton, NY, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at her home in the Highlands of Johnson City. She was predeceased by her parents, John E. and Edith Kauffman Hendry; her husband, Harold Bengel; her daughters, Carol A. and Gail E. Bengel; her brother, Laurence Hendry; and sisters, Rhoda Hunter and Ruth Little. She is survived by a sister, Jane K. Banzhof; nephews and niece, Joseph Banzhof, John Banzhof and Nancy Vokorokos, all of Lancaster; nephews and nieces in the Pittsburgh area and numerous great nieces and nephews in Lancaster; also a special friend, Robert Talkiewicz, W. Windsor, NY. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Binghamton, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was on the church council. She was a graduate of J. P. McCaskey High School, Lancaster, in 1941. Upon graduation, she worked at the Hamilton Watch Co. in Lancaster. In 1944, she joined the SPARS of the U.S. Coast Guard as a radio operator and served in Atlantic City and New York City. After WW II, Mildred attended and graduated from Syracuse University in 1950 majoring in Home Economics. Mildred became a case worker for Social Services and in her career became director of Broome County Social Services. Mildred will long be remembered for her relentless work as an advocate for the mentally and handicapped challenged individuals. Mildred was appointed by New York State for the Board of Visitors and served the Broome Developmental Center for numerous years. She was recognized for her dedication in June 2008 at the Developmental Center. Mildred's interests were her daughters' activities, sports and travel, especially to visit family in Lancaster.
Funeral services will be held at the J. A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Thursday at 9 AM. Deacon Lorna Henry will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Lancaster. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home Wednesday from 5-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Mildred may be made to Broome Developmental Center Foundation, PO Box 1124, Binghamton, NY 13902.
