The firemen were in the premises of Gainsborough Road School, West Ham - which was used as Sub Fire Station 16 under West Ham Fire Brigade - when it received a direct hit from a high-explosive bomb at 9.50pm.
The bomb landed on the girls' cookery annexe - at that time a dormitory for the firemen, ten of whom were asleep in anticipation of the night's work to come.
Sited within minutes of all West Ham's major targets in an area of East London that suffered some of the heaviest bombing of the Blitz, Gainsborough Road was among the busiest stations of the war.
10 firemen were killed,some instantly, some later died of injuries in hospital - the first 7 of those named were buried at East London Cemetery on 17th December, the other 3 were interred privately and the 11th name, their Station Padre/ARP Warden, died of injuries received in a different incident in March 1941.
