PRINCETON — Wanda June Hughes, 93, of Princeton, died Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Glenwood Park Retirement Village. Born in Princeton June 9, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Carl Chafe and Verna Adkins Linkenhoker. Wanda was a lifelong resident of Princeton. She graduated from Princeton High School in May 1934, and started Concord College in August, 1934. While attending Concord College, she worked at the library and served on the Pine Tree Annual staff. She graduated Concord University in 1937, and her lifelong teaching career began in September as a substitute teacher of English and Journalism at Spanishburg High School. Her Princeton High School teaching career started in 1939 where she taught English, Journalism, Public Speaking, World History and Geography. She married Roger Hughes November 29, 1940. Wanda attended West Virginia University night classes in Bluefield and summer sessions in Morgantown and completed her Master of Education degree in 1952. She retired from Princeton High School in 1982, having taught a total of 45 years for the Mercer County School System. Wanda spent her entire life teaching and helping others. As a child she would ride the trolley to visit relatives and help them with chores. She was a loving, strict and disciplined teacher, parent and grandmother, but she was always generous with her time in helping family, students and friends. Teaching was her life.
Wanda was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton where she was baptized in 1929 by Dr. Edward Stubblefield. She was a Regent for the Matthew French Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a past president of the Home Demonstration Club.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Roger Hughes; one brother, Carl Raymond Linkenhoker; and two sisters, Billie Vernon Linkenhoker and Alice Garnet Linkenhoker preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter Marilyn Remonko and her husband Guy of Athens, Ohio; two grandchildren, Paul Remonko and Sara Remonko Reeves and her husband Howard; and one sister, Mary Francis Linkenhoker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Park Cemetery in Princeton. Friends may call at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 19, 2010 and at the church one hour prior to services.
Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton is serving the Hughes family.
