Co-Founder of "Toys for Tots", Hampton was behind logistical development, in the beginning of "Toys for Tots". He graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Journalism. He worked for several wire services and newspapers prior to World War II. During the war he joined the Marine Corps as a War Correspondent in the Pacific Theater. He also worked on coding and decoding encrypted messages. After the war he became Public Information Officer for the Marine Corps Reserve in Los Angeles. In 1947, fellow Marine Corps Reservist Major William "Bill" Hendricks contacted him with the idea of the Marine Corps Reserve collecting old or broken toys, then fixing, and re-distribute them during Christmas time. John would go on to retire from the Marines. He began to suffer from dementia in early 2000. He would have a daily regimen of coffee and three chocolate bars. The 6-foot, 3-inch Marine lived to be 103 years old.
