Jefferson County Police Sgt. Ezra Sutherland, 40, native of Taylor County, was killed last Monday when the patrol car which he was driving collided with another automobile on the Dixie Highway near Waverly Hills.
Sutherlands body was returned here to the home of his aunt, Mrs. Welby Hash, Tuesday. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 21, at the Salem Baptist Church. Burial was in the Salem Church cemetery. A funeral was also held Tuesday at Valley Christian Church, near Louisville.
A news-story in Tuesday mornings Courier-Journal stated that: The driver of the automobile, Cpl. Kenneth C. Crane, 23, Fort Knox, fled the accident scene and was arrested later on charges of manslaughter, assault and battery, reckless driving, and hit-run driving.
Patrolman Warren Pool, 32, of 826 Sutcliffe, who was riding with Sutherland, suffered minor head injuries. Pool said he and Sutherland were cruising north on Dixie Highway (U.S. 31-W) when he saw a car coming south on the wrong side of the divided highway. "I yelled to Sutherland. He saw it, too, and swerved. The other car swerved in the same direction, and then we hit," Pool said. The patrolman said he saw a tall fellow in a t-shirt jump from the car. Pool didn't give chase because he was giving his attention to Sutherland.
Crane was arrested a short time later near Pleasure Ridge, about a mile away. He was preparing to get into a taxicab, police said. Crane admitted driving the car, Pool said. Cranes bond was set at $10,000 in Quarterly Court and his case was continued to July 24. His home is in Muskegon, Mich.
The death was the 21st traffic fatality in the county outside of Louisville this year. There were only eight during a corresponding period in 1949. Seven of this years deaths resulted from accidents on Dixie Highway.
Sutherland, who lived on Nall Avenue, died of a crushed chest, according to Deputy Coroner William T. Kammerer. The officer formerly served as a county alcohol beverage control investigator.
