Birth: Jan. 29, 1827
Norfolk County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Aug. 6, 1906
Norfolk County
Massachusetts, USA

son of John Souther, Jr. and Lydia Nichols Lincoln and husband of Sarah Hardwick Adams and 2nd to Mary Crosby Chubbuck.

In 1852, Edward could be found listed as a Grain Dealer. Edward operated a Newspaper and Periodical store (see advertisement elsewhere). According to the Dorchester and Quincy Directory of 1868-9, his store was located at 88 Hancock Street and his home at 69 Hancock Street, Quincy. His store was later moved to 1 Granite Street, the site of the Granite Trust Company (now the First National Bank of Boston and most recently, BankBoston).

In the mid 1800's, the California Gold Rush provided new opportunities in the "West" and Edward and his older brothers Henry and Frederick, Henry's son Henry and his Brother-in-Law, William Appleton were four of the more adventurous and enterprising men who left Quincy for the new "promised land". The complete diary of Henry Souther, describing the details of the Souther's Gold Rush adventures has been located at Yale University. The Souther Family Association has a copy of that diary (sponsored by Christopher H. Souther of Virginia). It appears that Henry, Frederick and the others left for California first and then was later joined by Edward. Edward left in 1850 via the Isthmus of Panama and joined his relatives (who had traveled via the Cape of Good Hope) at Feather River, California. From a travel permit dated the 18th of February 1850, signed by then Governor, George N. Briggs for Edward Brush Souther to travel to California and elswhere, I can find his physical description.

Age: 73 Years; Stature: 5'9"; Complexion: Light; Eyes: Blue & Hair: Brown.
