Born to Daniel and Jessie Scott Muirhead. One of 9 children. Moved with his family to Tama County Iowa from Keene Ontario Canada and became blind in an accident when he was about 11 years old. Attended the Iowa School for the Blind. Graduated in 1887. In 1893 taught school in North Dakota in a music academy before returning to Traer Iowa and entered numerous piano competitions. In 1901 he wrote the National Hymn for which he has a patent in the Library of Congress. Besides being a composer, gave private piano and violin lessons, wrote poetry, and tuned everyone's piano in and around Traer Iowa. He married one of his students Margaret Drynan Dodd Muirhead in 1911 and they had 3 children Infant daughter (died the same day), Jessie Janet, and George Robertson. He passed away in 1939 from Pneumonia. He was a christian man who never looked at blindness as a handicap.
