Actor. He is best remembered for voicing the title role (as well as other characters) in the original animated series "Speed Racer" (1967). Born in New York City, he was a juvenile performer in numerous radio programs and Broadway productions throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the latter including "Whiteoaks" (1938), "Watch on the Rhine" (1941 to 1942) and "Listen, Professor" (1943 to 1944). Following service in the US Army towards the end of World War II, he appeared in the motion picture "City Across the River" (1949 and had regular guest spots on several TV programs during the 1950s, among them "Kraft Theatre" and "Hallmark Hall of Fame". Fernandez ultimately found his niche as a voice actor, contributing to scores of animated programs during the course of his career. He died from lung cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
