Birth: Dec. 6, 1916
Death: Jun. 18, 2009

The Intelligencer,(Doylestown, PA), June 21, 2009

Joseph Stanley Wolgast of Hatboro, formerly of Philadelphia, died peacefully at home Thursday, June 18, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was 92. He was the son of the late Josef and Marya Wawrzacz. Joseph was drafted by the Phillies farm team but his baseball career was interrupted by World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army under Gen. George Patton's infantry. He landed on Normandy Beach, he held Metz and he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Wolgast was decorated with a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Joseph retired from Willow Grove Post Office after 25 years of service. He also was employed by Yarrington Mills, Hatboro. He was an active member of St. John Bosco Church, where he and his wife led the Red Cross Blood Drive, and volunteered at the annual carnival and Christmas bazaar. He was an active member in good standing with a fourth degree in Knights of Columbus. Joseph was an avid collector of coins and trains and enjoyed working with puzzles. He loved Philadelphia and was always able to help his family with directions no matter where they were going in the city. He attended many Mummer's Day Parades and enjoyed the string bands with his brothers. He was happiest when spending time with his large family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing games and watching Phillies baseball. He was a humble man, a good listener, and a quiet man whose words were meaningful. He will truly be missed. Joseph is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Fox) Wolgast; his sons, Joseph (Joanne) and John (Catherine); daughters, Mary Zaccardo (Thomas), Elizabeth Josten (Harry), Catherine Janos (Joseph), and Patricia Mahoney (William); his nephew, William Gordon (Catherine); 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brother, Frank; his sisters, Eleanor Ewing and Frieda Pitt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Henry; sisters, Helen Stefano and Dolores Toczylowski; and his grandson, Shawn O'Leary. Relatives and friends will be received by his family from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Louis Swift Plunkett Funeral Home, 529 N. York Road, Hatboro. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John Bosco Church, 235 E. County Line Road, Hatboro. Interment will be held in Hatboro Cemetery, Fulmor Avenue, Hatboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fr. Joseph A. Gallen Knights of Columbus, 998 Easton Road, Warrington, PA 18976. Louis Swift Plunkett Funeral Home, Hatboro
